The Popple River is a cool river in northeastern Wisconsin. It's like a smaller stream that flows into a bigger one, the Pine River. The Popple River is part of a larger area called the Menominee River watershed. This means all the water from the Popple River eventually joins the Menominee River.
This river flows for about 47 miles (76 km) (75 kilometers). It runs through two counties in Wisconsin: Forest and Florence. The Popple River helps drain a huge area of land, about 148,000 acres (60,000 ha) (60,000 hectares).
Where the Popple River Starts and Flows
The Popple River begins in a town called Argonne. This is in the northern part of Forest County. From there, it starts its journey flowing towards the east.
As it flows, the river goes through the Nicolet National Forest. This is a large, beautiful forest area. The river even passes by a small community that shares its name, Popple River.
The river continues its path through the southern part of Florence County. Eventually, it leaves the forest. It then turns north before finally joining the Pine River.
What's in the Popple River Watershed?
A watershed is like a big bowl. All the rain and snow that falls into this bowl eventually drains into one main river or lake. The Popple River watershed is a very important area.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, this watershed includes:
- About 236 miles (380 km) (380 kilometers) of smaller streams.
- 1,758 acres (711 ha) (711 hectares) of lakes.
- 35,875 acres (14,518 ha) (14,518 hectares) of wetlands. Wetlands are like spongy, wet areas of land.
Most of the land in the Popple River watershed is covered by forests. About 74% of the area is forest. Another 24% of the land is made up of those important wetlands.
