The Story of Port Denison

Port Denison has an interesting history. It was first known as Irwin Port in 1866. This name came from its location near the mouth of the Irwin River.

However, in 1867, the town got its official name. It was renamed to honor Sir William Denison. He was a former Governor of Tasmania. Sir William Denison visited Western Australia in 1851. He was involved in discussions about sending prisoners to Australia at that time.

How People Make a Living

Port Denison is a busy place for commercial fishermen. Many people in the town work in the fishing industry. It is a home port for many fishing boats.

These fishermen mostly catch lobster. Lobsters are often called "crayfish" by the local people. This seafood is a very important part of the town's economy.
