History of Port Hope
Early Beginnings
The first piece of land in what is now Port Hope was bought in 1851. This was done by William Stafford and Reuben Dimond. Later, Stafford and William Southard bought more land. This land was originally set aside for soldiers who fought in the War of 1812.
Southard traveled to the area by boat. A storm was coming, so he had to row to shore in a small boat. He promised that if he made it safely, he would name the place "Port Hope."
Lumber and Fires
William Stafford and others started a lumber business in the area. By 1858, his company had built a dock and sawmills were running. You can still see the chimney from one of these mills today. It is the last standing chimney in Michigan from the lumbering era.
Port Hope survived a big fire in 1871 and continued lumbering. But after a second fire in 1881, most of the trees were gone. So, the village changed its focus to farming. Stafford built a flour mill, a grain elevator, and a new dock to support the farmers.
Becoming a Village
Port Hope officially became a village in 1887. The railroad arrived in 1903, which helped the village grow. Today, visitors can take a walking tour to see some of the 11 historic sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Fun and Recreation
Stafford County Park is a great place for fun activities. Throughout the summer, it hosts softball tournaments and other events. This park is 38 acres big and has many conveniences for campers.
The park is also a national historic site. The old Sawmill chimney, built in 1858, stands near the waterfront. There's also a large enclosed pavilion. The park has 73 campsites and six camper cabins. You can find modern camping spots, tent sites, and group camping areas.
The park offers electricity, running water, flush toilets, and showers. There's also a boat launch, picnic areas, shelters, and a playground. You can go swimming and fishing here too. Stafford County Park is open from May 1st to October 15th each year.
