A Look Back: Port History

The Montevideo Bay was a key reason why the city was built here. It offered natural protection for ships. Today, two jetties also help protect the harbor entrance from waves. This natural port helps Montevideo compete with the Port of Buenos Aires. The Port of Buenos Aires is another large port on the Río de la Plata.

Building the Port: 1870 to 1930

Most of the big changes to the port happened between 1870 and 1930. During this time, workers built the first wooden pier. They also built several storage areas in La Aguada. The north and south Rambla roads were also constructed. A river port and a new pier were added. The river basin was also improved. The La Teja Refinery was built during this period too.

A major storm hit in 1923. It caused a lot of damage. Many structures in the city, including port facilities, needed repairs. After the mid-1900s, fewer physical changes were made. The area then started to decline because of economic problems in the country.

Port Growth and Challenges

The port is located near many industries. These businesses are often involved in importing and exporting goods. Other businesses support port activities and naval work. Because so many industries are around the port, not many people live in this area.

Environmental Concerns

The port faces some environmental challenges. These include mud building up underwater. There is also pollution in the air and water.

Modernizing the Port

The Port of Montevideo has been growing quickly. Its growth averages about 14 percent each year. This is due to more foreign trade. The city received a $20 million loan from the Inter-American Development Bank. This money will help modernize the port. It will make the port bigger and more efficient. It will also help lower costs for shipping goods by sea and river.

Katoen Natie owns an important facility at this port. This facility handles many shipping containers.
