Portage Lakes is a special kind of community in Summit County, Ohio, called a census-designated place. This means it's an area that looks like a town but isn't officially a city or village. In 2020, about 6,407 people lived here.
Portage Lakes is located just south of the city of Akron. It gets its name from the beautiful Portage Lakes that surround it. This community is part of Coventry Township and is also home to Portage Lakes State Park. The park is a great place for boating and swimming during the warmer months.
Exploring Portage Lakes Geography
Portage Lakes covers an area of about 8.2 square miles (12.8 square kilometers). A big part of this area, about 1.6 square miles (2.54 square kilometers), is water! This is because of all the lakes that give the area its name.
In the past, Portage Lakes included parts of both Coventry and Franklin townships. However, in 2005, Franklin Township became a new village called New Franklin. Now, Portage Lakes is entirely within Coventry Township. This is important because census-designated places are only found in areas that are not officially part of a city or village.
