A Look Back: Portland's History

Portland was one of three factory towns built around a large cement plant. A factory town is a community that grew up because of a big factory nearby, and many of its residents worked there. The original plant was called Portland Cement, and it is now known as Holcim. The other two factory towns close by were Concrete and Cement.

A post office was opened in Portland in the year 1900. It served the community for many years, finally closing down in 1952. The community itself was named after the type of cement made there: Portland cement.
