History of Portland
Portland got its start a long time ago. In 1911, a post office was opened there. A post office is a place where people can send and receive mail, and having one was a big deal for a community back then. It meant the area was growing and needed its own mail service.
The post office in Portland stayed open for about 18 years, closing down in 1929. The community was named after a company nearby called the Southern States Portland Cement Company. This company made Portland cement, which is a very important material used to make concrete for buildings, roads, and bridges. So, the name "Portland" comes from this type of cement that was made there!
