Portrait of Antonio de Covarrubias is a famous painting created by the artist El Greco between 1595 and 1600. It's an oil painting on canvas. El Greco painted it while he was living in Toledo. Today, you can see this painting in the Louvre museum in Paris, France. It arrived there in 1941 as part of an exchange with museums in Spain.
The person in the painting is named Antonio de Covarrubias y Leiva. He was a very important legal expert in Toledo. He taught law at the University of Salamanca and was a member of the Council of Castile, which was a powerful government group. He also taught at the Toledo Cathedral. Antonio was the brother of another important person, Diego de Covarrubias, and a close friend of El Greco himself.
El Greco painted Antonio de Covarrubias more than once. Another portrait of him by El Greco is kept at the El Greco Museum in Toledo. Some people also believe that Antonio de Covarrubias is one of the people shown in El Greco's very famous painting, The Burial of Count Orgaz. The simple, plain background in this portrait shows that El Greco was influenced by the artist Titian and other painters from Venice, Italy.
