Postage stamps and postal history of Macau facts for kids
This article explores the fascinating story of postage stamps and how mail was handled in Macau over time.
Stamps Under Portuguese Rule
Macau used to be a territory controlled by Portugal. The very first stamps for Macau were made by the Portuguese in 1884. These stamps had a special design called the "Portuguese crown." There were nine different stamps, and their values ranged from 5 to 300 "reis," which was the money used back then.
Macau Joins China
In 1999, Macau became a special region of China. This big change meant new stamps were needed! All the old stamps that said "Macau, Portuguese Republic" (Portuguese: Macau República Portuguesa) were stopped. New stamps were then printed with "Macau, China" on them instead.
