Meet the Potamochoerus Pigs

Where Do They Live?
Both types of Potamochoerus pigs live only in Sub-Saharan Africa. This is the part of Africa that is south of the Sahara Desert. It includes many different habitats, from forests to grasslands.
One type, the Bushpig, can also be found in Madagascar. Madagascar is a large island off the coast of Africa. It is thought that humans might have brought Bushpigs to Madagascar a long time ago. They also live on other nearby islands.
Different Kinds of Potamochoerus
There are two main species, or types, of Potamochoerus pigs. Each one has its own unique look and habits.
The Bushpig
The Bushpig is known by its scientific name, Potamochoerus larvatus. These pigs usually have reddish-brown to dark brown fur. They often have a lighter stripe along their back.
Bushpigs are mostly active at night, which means they are nocturnal. They live in groups called sounders. These groups usually have a dominant male and female, along with their young.
The Red River Hog
The Red River Hog is the other species, known as Potamochoerus porcus. These pigs are famous for their bright reddish-orange fur. They also have white markings around their eyes and on their cheeks.
Red River Hogs live in forests, especially near water. They are also social animals and live in sounders. They use their strong snouts to dig for roots and other food.
