History of Potomac Heights
In 1947, the people living in Potomac Heights decided to buy their entire community from the United States government. They did this by forming a co-operative. A co-operative is a group of people who own and run something together.
The community was originally built between 1940 and 1943. Its purpose was to provide homes for workers who were helping with defense efforts during that time.
Today, if someone wants to live in one of these co-op homes, they must first apply to become a member of the co-operative. The current members then vote on whether to accept new people based on certain rules.
Potomac Heights is one of several housing co-operatives in the Washington, D.C. area. Some of these co-ops, like Potomac Heights, were once government-owned housing. For example, Greenbelt is a much larger co-operative located nearby in Prince George's County. Greenbelt started as a planned community under the New Deal during President Roosevelt's time, as an experiment in cooperative living.
