Potsdam-Mittelmark is a district located in the western part of Brandenburg, Germany. It's like a region or an area that has its own local government. This district was formed in 1993 when three older districts – Belzig, Brandenburg-Land, and Potsdam-Land – joined together.

What Does the Coat of Arms Mean?

Every district has a special symbol called a coat of arms. The coat of arms for Potsdam-Mittelmark is split into four parts, each telling a story about the area.

  • The top left part shows a red eagle. This eagle is a well-known symbol for Brandenburg, the state where Potsdam-Mittelmark is located.
  • In the top right, you can see three oak leaves. These leaves represent the many oak forests found in the district. They also stand for the three old districts that came together to create Potsdam-Mittelmark.
  • The bottom right section has two bishop's keys. These keys are symbols of the Diocese of Brandenburg, which was an important church area in the past.
  • Finally, the bottom left part shows black and gold bars. These bars are a symbol of Saxony. They remind us that some areas, like Belzig, Brück, Wiesenburg, and Niemegk, were part of Saxony until the year 1815.
