Povl Dissing (born January 27, 1938 – died July 18, 2022) was a famous Danish singer, composer, and guitarist. He was also a talented harmonica player.
Povl released his first album, En aften i folkeklubben, in 1965. He became very well-known in 1973 with his album Svantes viserBenny Andersen. They worked together a lot after that. In 2006, Svantes viser was chosen for the Danish Culture Canon. This means it's considered a very important part of Danish culture.
. This album was a special project with the poetPovl Dissing grew up in Stavnsholt, a small village near Farum. This village is north of Copenhagen. Before becoming a full-time musician, he worked as a commercial artist. He first played the trumpet and jazz music. But an accident when he was young made him switch to playing the guitar. He mostly sang in Danish. He also worked with many other famous Danish musicians. He passed away on July 18, 2022, at 84 years old.
His Unique Music Style
Povl Dissing played a mix of blues, folk, and rock music. He was one of the first artists to sing rock music in the Danish language in the early 1960s. His singing style was very unusual and personal. He put a lot of emotion into his songs.
At first, some people didn't like his unique style. But his album Svantes viser from 1973 became very popular in Denmark. After that, more and more people enjoyed his music.
Throughout his career, Povl sang and put his own spin on many old Scandinavian and Danish songs. These included works by Bellman, Grundtvig, Thomas Laub, and Henrik Rung. He also sang newer songs and popular tunes called schlagers. He wrote music for several modern Danish poets too. These included Halfdan Rasmussen, Vagn Lundbye, and especially Benny Andersen. Many of his songs were written and composed by Povl himself.
Working with Other Artists
Povl Dissing worked with many well-known performers in Denmark and Norway. He recorded music with artists like Trille, Peter Thorup, and Fuzzy. He also collaborated with bands such as The Beefeaters and Burnin Red Ivanhoe. His work with poets Halfdan Rasmussen and Benny Andersen was also very important.
Besides music, Povl Dissing also lent his voice to cartoons and films. He also narrated audiobooks, bringing stories to life.
Povl had two sons, Rasmus and Jonas. They are also musicians. From the early 2000s, they often played and toured with Povl. Their band was called Dissing, Dissing, Las og Dissing. They released three studio albums together. In 2017, Povl had a fall and hit his head. Sadly, he lost his hearing in both ears after this accident.
