Ohiyesa "Pow Wow" Smith is a brave Western hero from DC Comics. He was created by writer Don Cameron and artist Carmine Infantino. Ohiyesa is a member of the Sioux people. He serves as the sheriff of Elkhorn, a small town in the Old West. People know him as a very skilled detective.
Ohiyesa prefers to be called by his real name. However, people kept calling him "Pow Wow" so much that he eventually accepted the nickname. At first, Pow Wow Smith's stories were set in the modern West. Later, his adventures moved to the 1800s. It was later explained that the Old West character was an ancestor of a modern-day character. This means Pow Wow Smith became a hero passed down through generations in the DC Universe. He even meets other heroes when they travel through time.

The Adventures of Pow Wow Smith
When Did Pow Wow Smith First Appear?
Pow Wow Smith first appeared in Detective Comics #151 in September 1949. He was the only Western hero featured in that comic book. After four years, his stories became the main feature in Western Comics. This comic series ran until 1961.
Many artists worked on Pow Wow Smith's adventures. Leonard Starr drew many stories when the character was in Detective Comics. Later, Carmine Infantino, the original artist, returned to draw him in Western Comics. Writers like France Herron and Gardner Fox also helped create his exciting tales. Pow Wow Smith also appeared in the first issue of All-Star Western (Volume 2).
Who is Ohiyesa Smith?
Ohiyesa left his home in Red Deer Valley to learn more about the world outside his tribe. He was very good at tracking and using a gun. These skills helped him become a deputy sheriff. Soon after, he became the sheriff of Elkhorn. His trusted deputy is a man named Hank Brown.
As sheriff, Pow Wow mostly stays in Elkhorn. He only goes back to Red Deer Valley for special reasons. In most of his adventures, Pow Wow's girlfriend is Fleetfoot. She is a Native American maiden and the daughter of Chief Thundercloud. Fleetfoot often helps Pow Wow solve mysteries and fight crime.
A Modern-Day Hero: U.S. Marshal Pow Wow Smith
There is also a modern-day version of Pow Wow Smith. This character is named Ohiyesa Smith, just like the original. He is a descendant, meaning a family member from a later generation, of the first Pow Wow Smith. This modern hero appeared in Robin (Volume 2) Annual #6.
This Ohiyesa went to college and then returned to Red Deer Valley. He wanted to help his tribe become more modern. He became a U.S. Marshal and also took the name Pow Wow Smith. He lives in Red Deer Valley and works with heroes like Robin. Together, they fight modern criminals, including a new version of the Trigger Twins. These adventures often happen in a recreated Old West town near Gotham City.
Pow Wow Smith in Cartoons
Pow Wow Smith has also appeared in animated shows. He was in the Justice League Unlimited episode called "The Once and Future Thing Part One: Weird Western Tales." Jonathan Joss provided his voice. In this cartoon, Pow Wow Smith was a sheriff in the 1880s. He was forced out of town by a villain named Tobias Manning.
With the help of other heroes like Bat Lash, El Diablo, Jonah Hex, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and Batman, Pow Wow Smith defeated Manning. In this cartoon, Smith still doesn't like the name "Pow-Wow." Only Tobias Manning calls him that.
