Powells Creek (sometimes spelled Powell's Creek) is a small river in eastern Prince William County, Virginia, United States. It flows into the Potomac River, which is a much larger river.

Where Does Powells Creek Flow?

Powells Creek begins near the Prince William County Landfill in Independent Hill. From there, it flows towards the southeast. The creek crosses Minnieville Road and Spriggs Road.

It then reaches Montclair, where it forms part of Lake Montclair. After the lake, Powells Creek continues its journey southeast. It flows under Waterway Drive and Northgate Drive.

The creek then goes under Interstate 95. It enters the Eagles Pointe community, passing through a tunnel. Finally, it flows under U.S. Route 1.

Near its end, the creek enters wetlands close to Leesylvania State Park. The Powells Creek Bridge crosses its mouth. The creek then joins the Potomac River right at the Maryland border.

What Happened Here?

In December 2004, an event happened on the U.S. Route 1 bridge over Powells Creek. A truck lost its trailer, and some material spilled into the creek. This spill caused harm to the fish living there.

In 2020, people started thinking about building a boardwalk over Powells Creek. This boardwalk would connect the Potomac Shores area with Leesylvania State Park. It would be similar to the boardwalk already built over Neabsco Creek. David Brickley, who suggested the Neabsco Creek boardwalk, supported this idea. Margaret Franklin, a local supervisor, also thought it was a good plan.
