Paralympic powerlifting is a super exciting sport where athletes show incredible strength! It has been a part of every Summer Paralympics since 1984. Before that, a similar sport called weightlifting was in the Paralympics from 1964. But after the 1992 Games, the organizers decided to focus only on powerlifting. Girls and women first started competing in powerlifting at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics.

What is Powerlifting?

Powerlifting is a strength sport where athletes try to lift the heaviest weight possible in a single lift. At the Paralympics, athletes compete in the bench press. This means they lie on a special bench and push a barbell (a long bar with weights on each end) up from their chest until their arms are straight. It takes amazing strength and control!
