Paralympic powerlifting is a strength sport where athletes lift heavy weights. It has been a part of every Summer Paralympics since 1984. Before that, a similar sport called weightlifting was included from 1964. However, after the 1992 Games, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) decided to focus only on powerlifting. Women started competing in powerlifting at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics.

How Powerlifting Works

In powerlifting, athletes lie on a bench and press a barbell with weights up from their chest. They must hold it steady at arm's length before lowering it back down. The goal is to lift the heaviest weight possible. Athletes compete in different weight classes to make it fair.
