Siamand's Powerlifting Journey
Siamand Rahman had a disability that affected both his legs because of polio. Despite this, he became a true champion. Many people called him the "world's strongest Paralympian."
He started his powerlifting career in Oshnavieh, Iran, in 2008. His family and coach, Ali Asghar, supported him from the beginning.
First Big Competitions
Siamand first competed on the world stage at the 2010 IPC Powerlifting World Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He competed in the over 100 kg category. He lifted 260.0 kilograms (573.2 lb) and won a silver medal. He even set a new IPC Powerlifting World Record by lifting 285.0 kilograms (628.3 lb) on a special fourth lift.
Just a few months later, Siamand won a gold medal at the 2010 Asian Para Games in Guangzhou, China. He broke the world record again, lifting 290.0 kilograms (639.3 lb)! This was amazing because he was still young enough to compete in the junior category.
He kept breaking his own records. On December 4, 2011, he lifted 291.0 kilograms (641.5 lb) at a competition in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
Olympic Gold and New Records
At the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, Siamand, who was 24 years old, won the gold medal. He broke the Paralympic championship record with his very first lift of 270.0 kilograms (595.2 lb). Then, he broke it again with his second lift of 280.0 kilograms (617.3 lb)! He tried to lift 301 kilograms (664 lb) on his third try but didn't quite make it. Even so, his 280 kilograms (620 lb) lift was 38 kg more than the silver medalist!
Siamand was very strong. He even hoped to lift more than 350 kilograms (770 lb) and become the first person to bench press 400 kilograms (880 lb) in a competition. He was the first Paralympic lifter to bench press over 600 pounds (270 kg).
After the 2016 Paralympics, Siamand was honored with the Best Male award at the Paralympic Sport Awards.
