Poyang Lake is the biggest freshwater lake in China. You can find it in the Jiangxi Province. Several rivers flow into Poyang Lake, including the Gan, Xin, and Xiu rivers. These rivers then connect the lake to the mighty Yangtze River through a special channel.

What is Special About Poyang Lake?

Poyang Lake is unique because its size changes a lot throughout the year. It gets much smaller during the dry season and then grows very large during the wet season. Long ago, during the Tang Dynasty, the lake was at its biggest, covering about 6,000 square kilometers (2,300 sq mi). Today, it is usually around 3,210 square kilometers (1,240 sq mi).

How Does the Three Gorges Dam Affect the Lake?

The size of Lake Poyang has become much smaller, especially because of the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River. This dam controls the water flow of the Yangtze, which affects how much water reaches Poyang Lake.
