Exploring Prairie Creek
Prairie Creek is about 9 miles (14 km) long. It starts in the hills and flows south. The creek eventually joins Redwood Creek about one mile upstream from a town called Orick, California.
Where the Water Flows
The water in Prairie Creek flows through different types of land. In some areas, it cuts through old rock formations. Closer to where it meets Redwood Creek, the land is flatter. This flatter area is made of soil and sand carried by the water over time. It's like a natural pathway for the creek.
Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park
A big part of Prairie Creek runs through Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. This park is famous for its amazing redwood trees. The creek helps to create a special environment for these huge trees and other plants and animals that live there. The water keeps the forest green and healthy.
Roads Near the Creek
For a long time, a major road called U.S. Route 101 followed Prairie Creek. This road went from Orick all the way to the Klamath River area. Now, a special part of the old highway through the park is called the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway. This parkway lets people enjoy the beautiful scenery. The main highway now uses a different path, further away from the creek.
