History of Prairie Home
The story of Prairie Home began a long time ago. In 1872, there was a post office here. This was even before the community was officially planned.
How Prairie Home Was Formed
In 1891, the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad helped plan the village. This process is called "platting." It means they laid out the streets and lots for buildings.
Where the Name Comes From
The name "Prairie Home" came from a farm. This farm was located south of the village. It belonged to a person named Mr. Waite. His farm was called Prairie Home, and the community took its name from there. The post office in Prairie Home stopped working in 1968.
