Early Life and Education

Pratap Chandra Chunder came from a family of important people. His father, Nirmal Chandra Chunder, was a key member of the Indian National Congress. This was a major political party that worked for India's independence. His father also served as the Mayor of Calcutta. Both his father and grandfather were famous lawyers in the city.

Pratap Chandra Chunder was a very good student. He studied history at Presidency College, Calcutta, and was the top student in his class. He then earned a law degree (LLB) from the University of Calcutta. Later, he also received a Doctor of Philosophy (D. Phil) degree from the same university. This shows he was dedicated to learning.

A Career in Politics

From a young age, Chunder joined the Indian National Congress political party. He became a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from 1962 to 1968. This assembly is like a state parliament. For a short time in 1968, he was the Finance and Judicial Minister for West Bengal. This meant he was in charge of the state's money and legal matters.

Serving as a Minister

From 1977 to 1979, Pratap Chandra Chunder served as a national minister. He was the Education and Social Welfare Minister of India. This was a very important job, as he was responsible for schools, colleges, and programs that helped people across the country. He was elected to this role from the Calcutta North East Lok Sabha constituency. The Lok Sabha is one of the two houses of India's national parliament. He won this election as a candidate for the Janata Party.

Beyond Politics: Law and Education

Besides his political work, Chunder was also a respected lawyer. He worked at the Calcutta High Court and was an advocate for the Supreme Court of India. This means he could argue cases in the highest courts of the country.

He also played a big role in education. From 1961 to 1968, he was a member of the Senate and the law faculty at Calcutta University. He was the founder and chairman of the West Bengal Heritage Commission. This group works to protect important historical places and traditions. He also led the Board of Governors for IISWBM, which was India's first school for MBA degrees. From 2000 to 2005, he was part of the executive council at Rabindra Bharati University. He also served as the President of the Presidency College Alumni Association for several years.

Pratap Chandra Chunder passed away on January 1, 2008, at the age of 88.
