Pratibha Parmar was born in Nairobi, Kenya. Her parents were from India. When she was 11 years old, her family moved to the United Kingdom.
She studied at Bradford University and later at Birmingham University. During her studies, she became interested in feminism. This is a belief that women should have the same rights and opportunities as men. Writers like Alice Walker and Angela Davis inspired her.
Career as a Filmmaker
Pratibha Parmar uses her films to tell important stories. In 1991, she made a film called Khush. This film looked at the lives of South Asian gay and lesbian people in the UK and India. It used both real-life footage and acted scenes.
She also made Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth in 2014. This documentary is about the life of famous author and activist Alice Walker. Pratibha Parmar met Alice Walker in 1991. They also worked together on another film called Warrior Marks. This film was about a very serious global issue. They also released a book with the same title in 1993.
In 2022, Pratibha Parmar released her documentary My Name is Andrea. This film is about the writer Andrea Dworkin.
