Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Preservative against Popery (also known as Preservation against Popery) is the name of a large collection of books. These books were written to argue against some ideas of Catholicism. Edmund Gibson published this collection in 1738. It used many arguments from earlier debates in the 1680s, when people from the Church of England felt that Catholicism was a threat. The first edition came in three very large books.

A New Edition in the 1800s

In the 1840s, a clergyman named John Cumming created a much larger version of this collection. His edition had 18 volumes and included many more writings. The publication was supported by the British Reformation Society. This group was reacting to a movement called Tractarianism, which was a religious movement within the Church of England at the time.

More Books Added Later

After Cumming's main edition, he worked with Richard Paul Blakeney and Martin Wilson Foye to edit a Supplement. This supplement was also published for the British Reformation Society and added eight more volumes to the collection.
