What Does the President Do?
The President of Angola leads the entire country. They make big decisions about how Angola is run. This includes managing the government and representing Angola to other countries.
How the Presidency Started
The position of President began when Angola became independent from Portugal. This happened in 1975. Agostinho Neto became the first President. His political party, the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), took control of the country.
After Neto passed away in 1979, José Eduardo dos Santos became the next President. Under his leadership, Angola started to have more than one political party. However, he remained in charge for a long time.
How Presidents Are Chosen
Angola's current rules for choosing a president were set in 2010. The President is elected for a five-year term. They can serve for two terms in total.
The election works a bit differently. People vote for a political party's list of candidates. The person at the top of the list for the party that gets the most votes becomes President. The new rules also created the job of Vice President.
Who is the Current President?
João Lourenço is the current President of Angola. He started his term on September 26, 2017.
