Prestonia, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Prestonia is a small, unincorporated community located in Ozark County, Missouri, in the United States. It's not a city or town with its own government, but rather a collection of homes and buildings without official boundaries.

This quiet spot sits on a ridge, which is like a long, narrow hill, overlooking a stream called East Pidgeon Creek. Prestonia is southwest of another community known as Howards Ridge. If you travel about a mile south from Prestonia, you'll reach the border between Missouri and Arkansas. Also, Norfork Lake, a large and popular lake, is only about four miles to the east.

You can get to Prestonia by taking Missouri Route J and then turning onto a county road named J529.

What is the History of Prestonia?

Prestonia got its start as a community in the late 1800s. A post office, which is where mail is sent and received, was opened in Prestonia in 1891. This post office served the local residents for many years before it eventually closed in 1913.

The community was named after a man whose last name was Preston. Mr. Preston owned a local mill, which was a very important business at the time. Mills used the power of flowing water to grind grain into flour or to cut timber. This made Mr. Preston's mill a central part of life for the people living in the area.
