Prignitz is a special area called a Kreis (which means district) in the northwest part of Brandenburg, Germany. Think of it like a county or a region that has its own local government.
This district was created in 1993. It was made by joining two older districts, Pritzwalk and Perleberg, along with some smaller towns from the Kyritz district. A small part of Prignitz used to be in another German state called Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. But on August 1, 1992, it became part of Brandenburg instead.
What Does the Prignitz Coat of Arms Mean?
The coat of arms is like a special symbol for the district. It tells a story about Prignitz!
- It shows a goose. This goose is a symbol of the old Gans zu Putlitz family. Gans is the German word for goose. This family was important because they helped bring Christianity and German culture to the Prignitz area a long time ago.
- Around the goose, you can see pearls. These pearls stand for the town of Perleberg. Its name means "Mountain of Pearl."
- At the bottom, there's a wolf. The wolf represents the former main city, Pritzwalk. The word walk in Pritzwalk comes from an old Slavic word wolk, which means wolf.
- The wavy line at the very bottom is a symbol for the Elbe River, which flows near the district.
Towns and Communities in Prignitz
The Prignitz district has several towns and smaller communities. Some of these towns are "Amt-free," which means they manage their own local government without being part of a larger group called an Amt. Other towns and villages are part of these Ämter (plural of Amt), which are like groups of communities that share some government services.
The biggest towns in Prignitz are:
- Perleberg (which is the capital of the district)
- Pritzwalk
- Wittenberge
There are also many other smaller towns and villages that make up the district, each with its own unique history and charm.
