The Prime Minister of Algeria is a very important leader in the country. This person is officially called the First Minister of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria. They act as the head of government, which means they help run the country's daily affairs.

The President of Algeria chooses the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister then suggests other people to be ministers in the government. The new government's plans must be approved by the People's National Assembly. If the Assembly does not approve, the Prime Minister must resign, and the Assembly might be dissolved.

There is no set time limit for how long a Prime Minister can serve. Mohamed Ben Ahmed Abdelghani served the longest, from 1979 to 1984. He was the first Prime Minister after the position was brought back in 1979. The current Prime Minister is Nadir Larbaoui, who started his role on November 11, 2023.

Understanding the Prime Minister's Role

The title and role of this important position have changed over time in Algeria. This happened since Algeria became independent in 1962.

How the Title Changed

The name for the head of government has been different at various times:

  • Head of Government: From September 27, 1962, to September 15, 1963.
  • Prime Minister: From March 8, 1979, to November 5, 1988.
  • Head of Government: From November 5, 1988, to November 12, 2008.
  • Prime Minister: From November 12, 2008, to December 30, 2020.
  • Prime Minister or Head of Government: Since December 30, 2020.

The Constitution and the Role

When Algeria first gained independence, a special assembly decided to have a "Head of Government." This was until a new constitution was written. The 1963 Constitution did not include a Prime Minister position.

Later, the 1976 Constitution made the position optional. It was not used during the time of President Houari Boumédiène. In 1988, the constitution was updated, and the role was simply called "Head of Government."

Another change in 2008 brought back the title of "Prime Minister." This person was appointed by the President. The most recent change in 2020 allows for a "Head of Government" if the parliament has a different majority than the President. If the President's party has the majority, then it's a "Prime Minister."

How a Prime Minister Serves

The President of Algeria chooses the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is chosen just like other members of the government. First, they are appointed to the cabinet. Then, they suggest people for other government jobs.

If the previous government has not resigned, the new Prime Minister does not need to form a completely new government.

Approval and Term Length

The People's National Assembly must approve the Prime Minister's main plans for the country. If they do not approve, the Prime Minister might be removed from their job.

There is no limit to how long a Prime Minister can serve. Mohamed Ben Ahmed Abdelghani served for almost five years in a row, from 1979 to 1984.

However, Ahmed Ouyahia holds the record for serving the longest overall. He was Prime Minister for a total of ten years across different periods. He is also the only person to have held the position more than once.

Official Workplace

The Prime Minister's main office is located at the Government Palace (Algiers) in Algiers, the capital city of Algeria.
