The President of Algeria is the main leader of Algeria. This person is both the head of state and the chief executive. They are also the commander-in-chief of Algeria's armed forces. The official title is President of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria.

The current president is Abdelmadjid Tebboune. He took office on 19 December 2019. He followed Abdelaziz Bouteflika as president.

What is the History of the Presidency in Algeria?

The role of president in Algeria began when the country gained independence from France in 1962. The first plan for the government, called the Tripoli Program, set up the president as the head of state. A prime minister was there to help run the government.

How the President's Role Changed

In 1963, a new constitution was created. This new plan removed the prime minister's job. All the power to run the country then went to the president. For about 40 years, one political party, the National Liberation Front (FLN), was in charge. Presidents during this time included Ahmed Ben Bella, Houari Boumédienne, and Chadli Bendjedid.

In 1976, another constitution kept the president's strong powers. However, changes in 1979 meant the president was no longer called the "head of government."

Challenges and New Elections

In the late 1980s, the FLN government started to become more open. But in 1991, a different party won elections. The military then stepped in. They made President Chadli Bendjedid resign in January 1992. The military took control and formed a group called the High Council of State.

This council chose Muhammad Boudiaf to be president for three years. The goal was to return to normal elections. However, Boudiaf was sadly assassinated. Ali Kafi took his place. During this time, Algeria went through a difficult period of civil conflict.

In 1994, Liamine Zéroual became president. He held an election in 1995 and won. The civil conflict was still happening. He called another early election in 1999. By then, the conflict was mostly over. Abdelaziz Bouteflika won this election. He was re-elected in 2004, 2009, and 2014.

Recent Changes in Leadership

In 2019, there were many protests in Algeria. Because of this, President Bouteflika resigned on 2 April 2019.

According to Algeria's constitution, the President of the Council of the Nation, Abdelkader Bensalah, became the acting president. He could serve for a maximum of 90 days until new elections were held. He could not run in these elections himself.

The current president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, won the 2019 Algerian presidential election on 12 December 2019. He officially started his job on 19 December 2019.

How Long Can a President Serve?

As of 2021, the Constitution of Algeria says a president can serve for two terms. Each term lasts for five years. This rule was put back into the constitution in 2016.

Who Won the Latest Election?

The most recent presidential election in Algeria was held in 2024.
