How the President's Job Started
When Algeria became independent from France in 1962, it had a plan for its government called the Tripoli Program. This plan said that the president would be the head of state. A prime minister would help run the government.
In 1963, a new constitution was made. This new plan gave all the main power to the president. It removed the prime minister's job. For about 40 years, one political group, the National Liberation Front (FLN), was in charge. Presidents like Ahmed Ben Bella, Houari Boumédienne, and Chadli Bendjedid were all members of this group.
Changes in Leadership
Towards the end of the 1980s, the FLN government started to become more open. However, in 1991, another group won elections. The military then stepped in. They made President Chadli Bendjedid resign on 11 January 1992.
The military took control and set up a special council. This council chose Muhammad Boudiaf to be president for three years. The goal was to get back to normal elections. But Boudiaf was sadly assassinated. Ali Kafi then became president. During this time, Algeria went through a difficult period.
In 1994, Liamine Zéroual became president. He held elections in 1995 and won. He called another election in 1999. Abdelaziz Bouteflika won this election. He was re-elected several times. In 2019, he planned to run for a fifth term. But due to large protests, he resigned on 2 April 2019.
After President Bouteflika resigned, Abdelkader Bensalah became the acting president. He was the head of the Council of the Nation. He served for a short time until new elections could be held.
The current president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, won the 2019 Algerian presidential election on 12 December 2019. He officially became president on 19 December 2019.
How Long a President Can Serve
As of 2021, the Constitution of Algeria says that a president can serve for two terms. Each term lasts five years. This rule was put back into the constitution in 2016.
