Abdelmadjid Tebboune was born on 17 November 1945 in Mécheria, a town in Algeria. His family came from the area of Boussemghoun. His father was a respected religious scholar and a soldier.
Tebboune studied at a school linked to the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulema. He later graduated from the National School of Administration in 1969. He is married to Fatima Zohra Bella and they have five children: Saloua, Maha, Salaheddine Ilyes, Mohamed, and Khaled.
Political Journey
Tebboune has held many important roles in the Algerian government.
- From 1991 to 1992, he was a Minister-Delegate for Local Government.

Presidency Highlights
Supporting the Hirak Movement
On the first anniversary of the Hirak Movement, President Tebboune made a special announcement. He declared 22 February as the Algerian "National Day of Fraternity and Cohesion Between The People and Its Army For Democracy." He praised the Hirak Movement, saying it "preserved the country from a total collapse." He also promised to fulfill the movement's demands.
Dealing with the COVID-19 Pandemic
To help stop the spread of COVID-19, Tebboune announced in March 2020 that all public marches and rallies were not allowed. This decision led to some people being arrested for protesting. Human rights groups criticized these actions, saying the government was trying to "silence Algerians."
Constitutional Changes
In December 2019, President Tebboune met with former Prime Minister Ahmed Benbitour to discuss building a "new Republic." In January 2020, Tebboune created a group of 17 experts to review the country's constitution. This group, led by Ahmed Laraba, was asked to suggest changes.
Tebboune asked the group to focus on several key areas:
- Making citizens' rights stronger.
- Fighting corruption.
- Balancing the powers of the government's different branches.
- Giving more oversight power to the parliament.
- Making the justice system more independent.
- Ensuring everyone is equal under the law.
- Setting a firm two-term limit for presidents. This was a major point for the Hirak Movement.
The proposed changes to the constitution were published in May 2020. The public could also suggest ideas. The new constitution was approved by the government and parliament. It was then put to a public vote on 1 November 2020, the anniversary of Algeria's war of independence. The changes were approved by 66.68% of voters.

Health Issues
In October 2020, Tebboune tested positive for COVID-19 and went to Germany for treatment. Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad took over his duties temporarily. Tebboune returned to work in December 2020. In January 2021, he went back to Germany for treatment for foot problems caused by the COVID-19 infection. He returned to Algeria in February 2021.
Recent Developments
In February 2021, new protests started across Algeria. In response, Tebboune made changes to his cabinet, replacing several ministers. He also dissolved the lower house of the Algerian Parliament and called for early elections.
In July 2021, Tebboune formed a new government with Ayman Benabderrahmane as Prime Minister. In July 2021, he also offered "total assistance" to Libya.

In May 2022, during a visit to Italy, Tebboune agreed to increase gas supply to Italy and Europe. This was important after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In July 2022, he signed a €4 billion energy contract with Italy, making Algeria Italy's biggest gas supplier. He also announced plans to increase Algeria's exports of goods other than oil and gas.
In December 2022, Tebboune met with the French Minister of Interior to discuss relations and issues like visas for Algerians. In June 2023, he visited Russia and met with President Vladimir Putin. They agreed to strengthen the "strategic partnership" between their countries.
