Abdelmalek Sellal (born on 1 August 1948) is an Algerian politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Algeria twice. His first term was from September 2012 to March 2014. He then served again from April 2014 to May 2017. As Prime Minister, he was the head of the government in Algeria, working with the president to lead the country.

Early Life and Education

Abdelmalek Sellal was born in Constantine, Algeria, on 1 August 1948. Constantine is a major city in Algeria. He grew up there before starting his career in public service.

Working for His Country

Sellal held many important roles in the Algerian government. From 1995 to 1996, he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is the part of the government that deals with other countries.

He was also an Ambassador to Hungary from 1996 to 1997. An ambassador is a country's official representative in another country. They help build good relationships between nations.

After his time as an ambassador, Sellal became a minister in the government. He was in charge of different areas:

  • Minister of the Interior (1998–1999)
  • Minister of Youth and Sports (1999–2001)
  • Minister of Public Works (2001–2002)
  • Minister of Transport (2002–2004)
  • Minister of Water Resources (2004–2012)

These roles show his wide experience in managing different parts of the country's needs.

Becoming Prime Minister

On 3 September 2012, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika chose Sellal to be the Prime Minister. This was a very important job. As Prime Minister, he was responsible for leading the government and making sure its plans were carried out.

Sellal was known as a technocrat. This means he was someone who used his technical knowledge and skills to solve problems in government. He also helped President Bouteflika with his election campaigns in 2004 and 2009.

In March 2014, Sellal stepped down from his role as Prime Minister for a short time. He did this to help President Bouteflika with his re-election campaign. After Bouteflika won the election, Sellal was reappointed as Prime Minister on 28 April 2014. He continued in this role until May 2017.
