Youcef Yousfi (Arabic: يوسف يوسفي) was born on October 2, 1941. He is a politician from Algeria. He served as the country's Minister of Energy and Mines from 2010 to 2015. For a short time in 2014, he was the acting Prime Minister of Algeria. Mr. Yousfi also represented Algeria at the United Nations from 2006 to 2008.
Early Life and Education
Youcef Yousfi was born in Batna. He studied in France. He went to the National School of Chemical Industries. There, he learned about Chemical Engineering. He also earned a special degree called a PhD in physics from Nancy University. Later, he also studied economics.
Political Career Highlights
Mr. Yousfi started his career as a teacher. He taught chemical engineering at important universities in Algiers. He also led the chemistry institute there. He worked as an adviser for oil matters at the Ministry of Industry and Energy.
In the late 1970s, Mr. Yousfi became a vice-president for marketing at Sonatrach. This is Algeria's national oil company. In 1985, he became the company's main leader, known as the CEO. In 1996, he became a top aide to the Algerian President, Liamine Zéroual. In 1997, he was chosen as the Minister of Oil and Energy. He was also elected as a member of the People's National Assembly.
In early 1999, Mr. Yousfi became the president of OPEC. This is a group of countries that work together on oil production. On December 23, 1999, he was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He held this important role until August 2000. After that, he became a special minister working with the Prime Minister.
In April 2001, Mr. Yousfi became the Ambassador of Algeria to Canada. This meant he represented Algeria in Canada. Later, in 2006, he became Algeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. This role meant he spoke for Algeria at the UN.
