Youcef Yousfi (Arabic: يوسف يوسفي) was born on October 2, 1941. He is a politician from Algeria. He served as the country's Minister of Energy and Mines from 2010 to 2015. He also worked as the acting Prime Minister of Algeria for a short time in 2014. Before that, Mr. Yousfi was Algeria's main representative to the United Nations from 2006 to 2008.

Early Life and School
Where Youcef Yousfi Grew Up
Youcef Yousfi was born in a city called Batna in Algeria. He went to school in France. He studied at a special school for chemical engineering. This school was called the National School of Chemical Industries.
His Education and Degrees
After his studies in chemical engineering, Youcef Yousfi earned a special degree. He got a PhD in physics from the University of Nancy. A PhD is a very high university degree. He also studied economics and earned a degree in that field.
Youcef Yousfi's Career
Starting as a Teacher
Youcef Yousfi began his career as a teacher. He taught chemical engineering at two big universities in Algiers. These were the National Polytechnic School and the Houari Boumediene University of Sciences and Technologies. He also led the chemistry department at one of these universities. Later, he became an expert adviser on oil for the Ministry of Industry and Energy.
Working in the Oil Industry
In the late 1970s, Mr. Yousfi started working for Sonatrach. This is a large Algerian company that deals with oil and gas. He became the vice-president for marketing. In 1985, he became the CEO of Sonatrach. This means he was the chief executive officer, in charge of the whole company.
Roles in Government
In 1996, Youcef Yousfi became a top assistant to the Algerian President, Liamine Zéroual. The next year, in 1997, he was chosen to be the Minister of Oil and Energy. At the same time, he was also elected as a member of the People's National Assembly. This is like being a member of parliament.
International and Diplomatic Work
In early 1999, Mr. Yousfi became the president of OPEC. OPEC is a group of countries that produce a lot of oil. On December 23, 1999, he was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. This role involves dealing with other countries. He held this position until August 2000.
After that, he worked as a special minister to the Prime Minister, Ali Benflis. In April 2001, Youcef Yousfi became the Ambassador of Algeria to Canada. An ambassador represents their country in another country. Later, in 2006, he became Algeria's main representative to the United Nations.
