Ali Kafi (Arabic: علي كافي) was an important Algerian politician. He served as the leader of Algeria from 1992 to 1994. During this time, he was the Chairman of the High Council of State. He also acted as the country's President.
Early Life
Ali Kafi was born in a place called El Harrouch in 1928. This area was part of French Algeria at the time.
Political Career
Ali Kafi was a key figure in Algeria's fight for independence. From 1954 to 1962, he was part of the underground forces. These groups worked to free Algeria from France. During this time, he became a Colonel in the army.
After Algeria gained independence, Kafi became a diplomat. He served as Algeria's ambassador to several countries. These included Syria, Egypt, Iraq, and Italy.
In 1992, Ali Kafi was chosen for a very important role. He became the chairman of the High Council of State. This council was a group of leaders who acted as the president of Algeria. He took on this role after the previous leader, Muhammad Boudiaf, was assassinated.
The High Council of State was set up as a temporary government. It was meant to guide Algeria during a difficult period. Ali Kafi's term as chairman ended on January 31, 1994.
Death
Ali Kafi passed away on April 16, 2013. He was 84 years old. He died in Geneva, Switzerland. His body was later buried in El-Alia cemetery in Algeria.
