Air transports of heads of state and government facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Imagine a special airplane or helicopter that carries a country's leader, like a president or prime minister! Many countries have these unique aircraft, often managed by their air forces. These planes are like flying offices, designed for safety and comfort. The most famous one is probably Air Force One, used by the President of the United States. Other well-known official planes include the Russian presidential aircraft, the British Royal Air Force VIP aircraft, and the Japanese Air Force One.

Leaders also use special helicopters, like the US President's Marine One. Helicopters are great for shorter trips because they can land in more places than planes. Sometimes, if a country doesn't have its own special plane, or if it's being fixed, leaders might rent a private jet. They often put their country's flag on it for the trip!

How Leaders Started Flying

Airspeed AS.6 Envoy G-AHAC Private Charter RWY 1948 edited-2
The Airspeed Envoy was used as air transport for the British Royal Family from 1937 onwards.

The idea of leaders flying in planes is quite old! On July 15, 1910, Tsar Ferdinand I of Bulgaria became the very first head of state to fly in an aircraft. This happened during his visit to Belgium.

Later, in 1919, British politicians like Prime Minister David Lloyd George started using modified bomber planes for quick trips across the English Channel. These planes were special because they had an enclosed space for passengers, which was new at the time!

The British monarch was the first to get truly dedicated air transport. In 1928, two Westland Wapiti planes were set aside just for the Royal family. Then, in 1936, when Edward became King, the King's Flight was created. This was the world's first special air unit just for a head of state!

After the war, many other countries started setting up their own special air transport for their leaders.
