|} The Ilyushin Il-62 (which sounds like Ill-yoo-shin Il-sixty-two) is a famous long-range jet airplane. It was built in the Soviet Union by a company called Ilyushin. This plane is known for being a "narrow-body" jet, meaning it has a single aisle inside. It could carry almost 200 passengers!
The Il-62 was given the nickname Classic by NATO, a group of countries working together. It was designed to fly very long distances.

History of the Il-62
The first Il-62 airplane took its very first flight on January 3, 1963. After a few years, the first version, the Il-62, started carrying passengers on September 15, 1967. A newer, improved version called the Il-62M began flying on March 9, 1974.
How Many Were Built?
Between 1963 and 1995, a total of 292 Il-62 planes were made. This included:
- 5 prototype planes (these are test versions)
- 94 original Il-62 planes
- 193 of the updated Il-62M planes
Who Used the Il-62?
The Il-62 was used by many different airlines around the world.
- Aeroflot, a big airline from the Soviet Union, used it a lot.
- Other airlines like LOT Polish Airlines and Cubana de Aviación also flew the Il-62.
- Today, only a few are still flying. Air Koryo and Rossiya Airlines (for government use) are some of the main users.
Special Features of the Il-62
The Il-62 had some unique design features.
- It had four jet engines, which is a lot for an airliner.
- These engines were placed at the back of the plane, near the tail.
- This design helped make the wings cleaner and more efficient.
- The plane also had a special small "tail prop" or "crutch" that would extend from the back. This was to prevent the tail from tipping over when the plane was parked and passengers were getting on or off, especially if the front was empty.
