History of Uganda's President
The role of President in Uganda began on October 9, 1963. Before this, the Queen of Uganda (who was Elizabeth II) was the head of state. At first, the president's job was mostly ceremonial. This means they had no real power to make decisions.
The first president was Sir Edward Muteesa. Things changed in 1967 when Milton Obote became president. He combined the roles of Prime Minister and President. This made the president the main decision-maker for the first time.
Since then, nine people have held this important job. Most of them came to power after big changes like civil wars. The current president, Yoweri Museveni, started in 1986. He has been president longer than anyone else in Uganda's history.
Who Can Be President?
To become president in Uganda, there are a few rules. You must be a citizen of Uganda from birth. You also need to be at least 35 years old. Plus, you must be able to be a member of Parliament.
In 2005, a rule about how many times someone could be president was removed. Later, in 2017, the age limit of 75 for presidential candidates was also removed.
The President's Home: State House
The official home of the President of Uganda is called State House. The main State House is in Entebbe. It was built in 1925 for the British Governor of Uganda.
When Uganda became independent in 1962, it became the official home for the President. There is also a second State House located in Nakasero.
