A Look at History: How the Office Began
The role of President in Uganda started on October 9, 1962. Before this, the Queen of Uganda, Elizabeth II, was the head of state. The first President was Mutesa II of Buganda. At first, the President's job was mostly ceremonial. This means they had an important title but didn't make many big decisions.
Things changed in 1967. Milton Obote became President and combined this role with that of the prime minister. This made the President a powerful leader with executive powers. It meant they could make and carry out important decisions for the country.
Since then, nine different people have held the office of President. Many of these leaders came to power during challenging times in Uganda's history. The current President, Yoweri Museveni, started his term in 1986. He has served longer than any other President in Uganda's history.
Who Can Be President?
To become President of Uganda, a person must meet certain requirements. First, they must be a citizen of Uganda from birth. They also need to be at least 35 years old.
Another important rule is that they must be able to serve as a member of Parliament. Over time, some rules about who can run for President have changed. For example, in 2005, the limit on how many terms a President could serve was removed. In 2017, the age limit of 75 years for candidates was also removed.
The President's Home: State House
The State House is the official home of the President of Uganda. It is located in Entebbe. This grand building was first built in 1925. It was originally the home for the Governor of Uganda when the country was under colonial rule.
When Uganda became an independent country in 1962, the State House became the official residence for its Presidents. There is also another State House located in Nakasero.
Recent Elections
The most recent presidential election in Uganda took place in January 2021. In this election, Yoweri Museveni was re-elected as President. He has been the leader of Uganda since 1986.
