The president of the Republic of Yemen is the head of state of Yemen. This means the president is the main leader and representative of the country. According to the laws of Yemen, the president is also the top commander of the Armed Forces. They also lead the executive branch, which is the part of the Yemeni government that carries out laws and policies.
As of April 7, 2022, the role of president is handled by a group called the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC). This council is led by a chairman. The chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council has many important powers. These include leading the military and choosing governors and other key officials.
Who Leads Yemen?
The first president of a united Yemen was Ali Abdullah Saleh. He served for the longest time. The second president was Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, who started his term on February 27, 2012. His time as president was meant to end on February 27, 2014. However, he continued to serve past this date.
On January 22, 2015, President Hadi announced he was stepping down. He confirmed this decision two weeks later. After his resignation, a group called the Houthi Supreme Revolutionary Committee took control of the government. But on February 21, 2015, Hadi returned and declared himself president again from Aden.
On April 7, 2022, in a speech on television, President Hadi officially resigned. He also removed Vice President Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar from his position. Hadi then gave all the powers of the president and vice president to the Presidential Leadership Council. Rashad al-Alimi, who used to be an interior minister, became the chairman of this new council. Soon after taking office, al-Alimi visited Saudi Arabia. He met with King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed on April 29, 2022. They discussed supporting efforts for peace in Yemen and the surrounding region.
Another group, the Houthi Supreme Political Council, also claims to lead Yemen. Their chairman is Mahdi al-Mashat. However, only Iran recognizes his claim as the leader.
