Rashad Muhammad al-Alimi (Arabic: رشاد محمد العليمي, romanized: Rashād Muḥammad al-ʻUlaymī; born January 15, 1954) is an important political leader in Yemen. Since April 7, 2022, he has been the chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council. This council is a group that now holds the powers of the President of Yemen.

Early Life and Education
Rashad al-Alimi was born on January 15, 1954. He grew up in a village called Al-Aloom in the Taiz Governorate area of Yemen. His father was a judge named Mohammed ben Ali al-Alimi.
He finished high school in Sanaa in 1969. Later, he studied military science in Kuwait and earned a degree in 1975. He also got a degree in arts from Sanaa University in 1977. He continued his studies in Egypt, earning a master's degree and a doctorate in sociology between 1984 and 1988 from Ain Shams University.
Political Career

Rashad al-Alimi is a member of the General People's Congress political party. He served as the Minister of the Interior from April 2001 to 2008. This role is like being in charge of the country's police and security.
After that, he became the Chairman of the Supreme Security Committee. He also served as Deputy Prime Minister in charge of defense and security. In 2014, he became an adviser to President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi.
In June 2011, during a conflict in Sanaa, al-Alimi was injured in an attack on the Presidential Palace. He received medical treatment in Saudi Arabia and Germany. He returned to Sanaa in June 2012. However, he later left the city due to the Houthi takeover in Yemen and has been living in Saudi Arabia since 2015.
Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council
On April 7, 2022, Rashad al-Alimi became the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council. This council was given the powers of the President of Yemen. President Hadi officially transferred his powers to this new council.
On August 27, 2024, al-Alimi visited Taiz, which is the third-largest city in Yemen. It was his first official visit there. He promised to help free parts of the city controlled by the Houthis. He also pledged to end the nine-year-long Houthi siege on the city. He promised to improve basic services like electricity. He also announced new projects funded by Saudi Arabia. These projects include a power plant, a medical school, and better roads.
Relationship with the Houthis
In January 2024, al-Alimi spoke to journalists in Riyadh. He said that the airstrikes by the United States and the United Kingdom against the Houthis were "defensive." He believes that solving the Red Sea crisis means stopping the Houthis' military power.
On January 23, 2025, al-Alimi praised the US President's decision to name the Houthis a "foreign terrorist organization" again. He called this step "key to accountability" and a way to bring "peace and stability in Yemen and the region."
