Ain Shams University (Arabic: جامعة عين شمس) is a big public university in Cairo, Egypt. It was started in 1950. This university offers education for students at all levels, from those just starting college to those studying for advanced degrees.

History of Ain Shams University

Ain Shams University began in July 1950. It was the third public university in Egypt that wasn't linked to a religion. Older universities like Al-Azhar were religious, and some private ones existed too. When it first opened, it was called Ibrahim Pasha's University. The university is built on the site of an old royal palace called the Zafarana Palace.

The two public universities that were older than Ain Shams were Cairo University and Alexandria University. When Ain Shams University first started, it had several different schools and study centers. Over time, these grew into the many faculties and institutes you see today. The university now has 21 different faculties, one high institute, and 12 special centers.

Ain Shams University in Films

In 2012, a TV show based on a book called Zaat was being filmed at Ain Shams University. The story was set in the 1970s. Some students and teachers at the university had concerns about the clothes worn by the actresses, saying they were not appropriate. Because of these concerns, the filming had to be stopped.
