Sherif Ismail (Arabic: شريف إسماعيل) was an important Egyptian engineer and politician. He was born on 6 July 1955 and passed away on 4 February 2023. He served as the Prime Minister of Egypt from 2015 to 2018. Before that, he was the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources from 2013 to 2015.
Early Life and Education
Sherif Ismail was born in Egypt on 6 July 1955. He loved to learn about how things work. He chose to study mechanical engineering at Ain Shams University. He finished his studies and graduated in 1978.
His Career in Government
After university, Sherif Ismail worked in big companies that dealt with oil and natural gas. He held important leadership jobs. He became the head of a company called ECHEM, which handles chemicals made from oil. This company started in 2002.
Later, he became the chairman of the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS). He also worked as a managing director for another oil company, GANOPE. He then became the chairman of GANOPE.
In 2013, he was chosen to be the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources. This was a big job where he was in charge of Egypt's oil and gas. He took on this role on 16 July 2013.
On 12 September 2015, Sherif Ismail was appointed as the Prime Minister of Egypt. This meant he was the head of the government, working under the President. During his time as Prime Minister, Egypt faced some economic challenges. The value of the Egyptian pound currency became much lower in 2016.
Because of these challenges, his government had to make tough economic changes. In March 2016, he changed ten ministers in his team. These included ministers for finance, investment, and tourism. In February 2017, he changed nine more ministers, mostly those dealing with the economy.
In November 2017, Sherif Ismail went to Germany for medical treatment. He returned to his job on 1 December. During his absence, Mostafa Madbouly, who was the Minister of Housing, took over as acting Prime Minister.
On 5 June 2018, Sherif Ismail offered his resignation to the Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. He continued to work as Prime Minister for a short time. Two days later, President Sisi appointed Mostafa Madbouly to take over as the new Prime Minister.
After leaving the Prime Minister's role, Sherif Ismail continued to serve his country. On 9 June 2018, he was named a top advisor to President Sisi. From 18 June, he worked as a presidential aide for national projects. He even represented President Sisi at the funeral of Jacques Chirac in 2019.
Later Life and Passing
Sherif Ismail was married and had two children. He had some health issues with his digestive system. He had an operation in Germany in November 2017.
He passed away in Cairo on 4 February 2023. He was 67 years old. The news of his death was first shared by President Sisi on social media.
A military funeral was held for him on 5 February. The funeral prayers took place at a mosque in New Cairo. Many important people attended, including President Sisi, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
