South Yemen, officially called the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, became an independent country in November 1967. This happened after the British left the area.

In May 1990, South Yemen joined with North Yemen (the Yemen Arab Republic). They formed one country called the Republic of Yemen. However, in 1994, a civil war broke out. During this war, South Yemen tried to become a separate country again, calling itself the Democratic Republic of Yemen. This new country lasted only a short time before Yemen was reunited.
