Marine One facts for kids
Marine One is the special name, called a call sign, for any helicopter or airplane from the United States Marine Corps that is carrying the President of the United States. It's like a special code name that tells everyone the President is on board! When the President is flying in a Marine aircraft, that aircraft instantly becomes "Marine One."
If the Vice President of the United States is on a Marine aircraft, its call sign becomes Marine Two. But if both the President and Vice President are on the same Marine aircraft, it always gets the "Marine One" call sign.

What is Marine One?
Marine One is more than just a helicopter; it's a symbol of the American presidency. It's used for short trips, like flying from the White House to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, or for quick visits to nearby places. This special helicopter helps the President travel safely and quickly, avoiding traffic on the ground.
Why is Marine One Special?
Marine One is one of the most secure aircraft in the world. It's designed to protect the President from many threats. It has advanced communication systems, so the President can stay in touch with leaders around the globe, even while flying. There are always several helicopters flying together, and only one is Marine One. This makes it harder for anyone to know which helicopter the President is actually in.
The Helicopters Used
The helicopters used for Marine One are part of a special squadron called HMX-1, known as the "Nighthawks." They are based at Marine Corps Air Facility Quantico in Virginia. The main helicopters used are the Sikorsky VH-3D Sea King and the Sikorsky VH-60N White Hawk. These helicopters are specially modified for presidential travel.
Inside Marine One
Inside Marine One, it looks like a comfortable, flying office. There are plush seats, a desk, and advanced communication gear. The President can hold meetings, make phone calls, and work while traveling. The interior is designed for both comfort and security.
How Marine One Works
When the President needs to fly, a team of Marine pilots and crew members is ready. Before Marine One takes off, a special team checks the flight path and landing zones to make sure everything is safe. When the helicopter lands, a Marine in a dress uniform is always there to open the door for the President. This tradition shows the respect and importance of the President's arrival.
History of Marine One
The first time a helicopter was used to carry a U.S. President was in 1957. President Dwight D. Eisenhower used a Bell H-13 Sioux helicopter to fly from the White House to Camp David. This was a faster way to travel than by car. Since then, helicopters have become a key part of presidential transportation. Over the years, the helicopters have been upgraded to be safer, faster, and more advanced.
