Primeval Whirl at RCDB |
Primeval Whirl was a fun steel wild mouse roller coaster at Disney's Animal Kingdom. This theme park is part of the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The ride was a spinning roller coaster built by Reverchon Industries.
Primeval Whirl was located in an area called Chester and Hester's Dino-Rama. This area is part of DinoLand U.S.A.. It was known as a "Mild But Wild Thrills" ride. The cool thing about Primeval Whirl was that its cars spun around as they moved on the tracks. This meant that each time you rode it, your experience could be a little different! The ride had 13 cars, and each car could hold up to four riders.
The Ride's Exciting Features
Primeval Whirl was unique because it actually had two roller coasters side-by-side. They faced in opposite directions. This was similar to Space Mountain at the Magic Kingdom. However, unlike Space Mountain, both tracks on Primeval Whirl had the exact same layout. They were not mirrored versions of each other.
The ride was a "Wild Mouse" style coaster. This means it had sharp, quick turns and sudden drops. The spinning cars added an extra twist to these classic coaster moves. Riders would experience different views and sensations as their car rotated.
The Story and Theme
The theme of Primeval Whirl was all about time travel. It also focused on the giant meteor that scientists believe caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. The ride's story was very similar to another nearby attraction. That attraction is called Dinosaur, which is a dark ride.
As you rode Primeval Whirl, you felt like you were traveling back in time. You would see cartoon-like dinosaurs and other prehistoric elements. The ride was designed to look like a wacky, homemade time machine. It fit perfectly into the DinoLand U.S.A. area.
Why Did It Close?
Primeval Whirl first opened on March 31, 2002. For many years, it was a popular ride for families visiting Disney's Animal Kingdom. However, starting in June 2019, the ride began operating only during busy times of the year. This is called "seasonal operation."
Later in September 2019, park officials confirmed that the attraction would continue to operate only seasonally. Then, on July 16, 2020, Disney officially announced that Primeval Whirl would not reopen. The ride closed permanently after being a part of Disney's Animal Kingdom for 18 years.
