Prince Hisaaki (久明親王, Hisaaki Shinnō, October 19, 1276 – November 16, 1328; r. 1289–1308), also known as Prince Hisaakira, was an important figure in ancient Japan. He was the 8th shōgun of the Kamakura shogunate. A shōgun was a powerful military leader who ruled Japan for the emperor.
Prince Hisaaki was the official ruler from 1289 to 1308. However, a strong family called the Hōjō clan actually held most of the power. They were like regents, making the real decisions. Prince Hisaaki was the son of Emperor Go-Fukakusa. His successor, Prince Morikuni, was his own son.
Prince Hisaaki's Life and Role
Prince Hisaaki was born on October 19, 1276, in Heian-kyō, which is now Kyoto. He became shōgun when he was just 13 years old. This was a time when the Hōjō clan had a lot of control over the shogunate.
Even though he was the shōgun, Prince Hisaaki was mostly a figurehead. This means he had the title, but the Hōjō clan made the important choices. He served as shōgun for 19 years before stepping down in 1308. He passed away on November 16, 1328.
His Family Connections
Prince Hisaaki came from a very important family. His father was Emperor Go-Fukakusa, a former emperor of Japan. This made Prince Hisaaki a member of the imperial family.
He was also the younger half-brother of Emperor Fushimi. His mother was Fujiwara no Fusako. Prince Hisaaki was adopted by Prince Koreyasu, who was the shōgun before him.
His Children
Prince Hisaaki had several children. His main wife was the daughter of Prince Koreyasu. Together, they had a son named Prince Morikuni. Prince Morikuni later became the next shōgun after his father.
Prince Hisaaki also had other children with a concubine named Reizei no Tsubone. These included Prince Hisayoshi and Prince Hiroaki.
