Princess is a small community located in Boyd County, Kentucky, in the United States. It's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

Where is Princess Located?

Princess is found along Kentucky Route 5. It is close to where U.S. Route 60 and Kentucky Route 5 meet. The community stretches from near the top of Princess Hill. This hill is on US 60, between Princess and another community called Cannonsburg.

Princess also extends southwest along US 60. It reaches the community of Coalton. Along Kentucky Route 5, Princess goes to where Straight Creek and William's Creek join. This is near the intersection of Kentucky Route 5 and Straight Creek Road. Princess uses the same zip code (41102) as Ashland. It is also part of a larger area called the Huntington-Ashland Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The Story of Princess

How Princess Got Its Name

The community of Princess is named after an old iron furnace. This furnace was built in the late 1800s. People say the furnace was named "Princess" because it was the special nickname of a daughter of one of the furnace's officials. At first, the community might have even been called "Princess Furnace."

The Old Iron Furnace

Today, you can still see a large brown sandstone wall from the Princess Furnace. This wall is along Kentucky Route 5. The actual iron furnace was taken apart and moved to Glen Wilton, Virginia in 1883 or 1884.

A special historical marker (number 1135) for Princess Furnace is near this sandstone wall. The furnace was very close to this wall. Raw materials were loaded into the furnace from its top. Workers used a walkway from the hill that the sandstone wall held up. The iron ore used in the furnace was dug up nearby. You can still see shallow holes where the ore was mined from the hills.

How the Community Changed

Over time, the main part of Princess moved. It shifted closer to where Kentucky Route 5 and US 60 cross. This change likely happened because of a large brick factory. This factory was near Kentucky Route 5 and US 60. It is mostly taken apart now.

The brickyard used to have many "company houses" for its workers. A few of these houses were still there until the early 1990s. Now, they are all gone, and the land is privately owned. More recently, new areas have been built. These include the "Princeland" neighborhood and the Paul Coffey Industrial Park. Both are very close to the KY 5 / US 60 intersection.

A railroad track runs next to US 60 in the Princess area. There is a tunnel that goes under Princess Hill. This used to be a major rail line for the C & O. It ran from Ashland, Kentucky to Louisville, Kentucky. Now, it's a smaller track that ends at a steel mill in Coalton.
