Princess Elisabeth of Denmark (born 8 May 1935 – died 19 June 2018) was an important member of the Danish royal family. She was the only daughter and oldest child of Knud, Hereditary Prince of Denmark and Princess Caroline-Mathilde of Denmark. She was also a first cousin of the current Danish monarch, Queen Margrethe II.
Her Life as a Royal
Princess Elisabeth held the special title of Prinsesse til Danmark. This title is given to members of the royal family who are in the line to become king or queen. At the time of her death, she was 12th in line to the Danish throne. She was the only one of her father's children who kept her right to become queen.
Working for Denmark
Princess Elisabeth also had a career outside of her royal duties. From 1956 to 2001, she worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is a government department that handles Denmark's relationships with other countries. She even worked abroad for Denmark many times.
Her Passing
The Danish Royal Court announced that Princess Elisabeth passed away on 19 June 2018. Her funeral and cremation service took place on 25 June at Lyngby Church.
Special Recognitions
Princess Elisabeth received several special awards and honours during her life:
- The Princess Elizabeth Alps in Greenland were named after her.
- She was a Knight of the Order of the Elephant, which is Denmark's highest honour.
- She received the Medal of Merit in Silver.
- She was given medals to celebrate important royal events, like the 100th birthday of King Christian X and the 75th birthday of Queen Margrethe.
- She also received the Prince Henrik's Commemorative Medal.
