What is the Prince/Princess of Asturias?
The title of Prince or Princess of Asturias shows who will be the next ruler of Spain. It is similar to how some other countries have a "Crown Prince" or "Crown Princess." The person holding this title is usually the oldest child of the King or Queen.
History of the Title
The title of Prince of Asturias was first created a very long time ago. In 1388, John I of Castile, who was the King of Castile, gave this title to his oldest son, Prince Henry. Prince Henry later became King Henry III of Castile. This was a way to clearly show who would inherit the throne next.
For many centuries, the title was used for the heir to the Spanish throne. However, in 1931, the monarchy in Spain was overthrown. This meant the king was no longer in power, and the title of Prince of Asturias stopped being used.
Later, a leader named Francisco Franco decided that Juan Carlos de Borbón would be the next king. Instead of the old title, he gave Juan Carlos the new title of "Prince of Spain."
But in 1977, the traditional title of Prince of Asturias was brought back. It was given to Felipe VI of Spain, who was the oldest son of King Juan Carlos I. Felipe VI was the heir apparent at that time. When Felipe VI became King, his oldest daughter, Leonor, became the Princess of Asturias.
Who Has Held the Title?
Many important people who later became Kings and Queens of Spain held the title of Prince or Princess of Asturias. Here are some examples:
- Henry III of Castile (the first one)
- King Luis I
- King Fernando VI
- Alfonso XII of Spain
- Felipe VI of Spain (the current King of Spain)
