Princeton, Newton County, Texas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Princeton was a small settlement in Newton County, Texas, right next to the Sabine River. Today, it's known as a ghost town. This means it's a place where people used to live, but now it's mostly empty.

The Story of Princeton

Princeton was located in southeastern Newton County, Texas. It was very close to where the town of Deweyville is now. This spot was about 30 miles northeast of Beaumont.

How Princeton Started

The area where Princeton was built is called Princeton Bluff. Some people also called it Possum Bluff. The town was officially planned out in 1839. This means someone drew up maps for streets and building lots.

A River Stop

Because Princeton was right on the Sabine River, it became an important place. Boats could land there, and people could cross the river using a ferry. This made it a busy stop for travelers and traders.

A Short-Lived Town

Princeton never grew very big. It had a post office, but only for a short time, from 1880 to 1881. As the nearby town of Deweyville started to grow and become more important, Princeton slowly faded away. By the early 1900s, most people had left, and it became the ghost town we know today.
