The Principality of Transylvania was a special kind of state that existed for a long time in Europe. It was mostly independent, meaning it ruled itself, but it also had ties to bigger empires. This state was led by princes, who were usually Hungarian and followed a type of Christianity called Calvinism.
The Principality of Transylvania was mostly independent from 1571 to 1711. After that, it became a part of the powerful Habsburg Monarchy (also known as the Austrian Empire) from 1711 until 1867.
