The Priory Church of St. Anthony, Lenton is an old and important church located in Lenton, Nottingham. It is a parish church, which means it serves the local community. It belongs to the Church of England.

History of the Church

This church was mostly built in 1883. However, some parts of it might be even older. These older parts may have come from the chapel of a monastic hospital. This hospital was once part of Lenton Priory.

The church used to be the main church for Lenton. But then, Holy Trinity Church was built. After that, St. Anthony's Church was partly torn down. It stayed like that for almost 40 years.

Bringing the Church Back to Life

Work to restore the church began in 1883. This type of repair work is often called a "Victorian restoration." On November 22, 1883, a special memorial stone was placed. Mrs. J. Sherwin Gregory, who was the Lady of the Manor (a very important person in the area), laid the stone.

The church was then blessed by Christopher, who was the Bishop of Lincoln. A bishop is a senior leader in the church. The next year, in 1884, the church was officially dedicated to St. Anthony. This is why it is often called the Priory Church.

The restoration work was done by two architects, Evans and Jolley. The church officially reopened on December 4, 1884.

Today, the Priory Church of St. Anthony is part of a group of churches. This group also includes Holy Trinity Church, Lenton.

The Church Organ

The church has a special musical instrument called a pipe organ. It was made by Ernest Wragg and Son. This organ was put into the church in 1924.
