Early Life and Education
Priscilla B. Anderson was born and grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After high school, she went to Trenton State College. There, she earned two degrees: a bachelor's and a master's degree in education.
After finishing her studies, she became a teacher. She also worked as a guidance counselor. She helped students in the Trenton Public Schools with their school and career choices.
Serving Her Community
Priscilla Anderson was very involved in her local community. In 1981, she was elected to the council in Willingboro Township, New Jersey. A township council helps make decisions for the local town. She served on the council for many years.
She also had an important leadership role. She served as the mayor of Willingboro Township twice. She was mayor in 1984 and again in 1991.
Becoming a State Legislator
For most of her early career, Priscilla Anderson was a member of the Democratic Party. But in 1991, she decided to join the Republican Party.
Later that year, she ran for a seat in the New Jersey General Assembly. She and her running mate, José F. Sosa, won the election. They defeated the people who were already in office. This was a big moment for her. Priscilla Anderson became the first African American woman elected to the state legislature from Burlington County.
After the Assembly
Priscilla Anderson served one term in the General Assembly. In the next election in 1993, she and José F. Sosa ran again. However, they were defeated by the Democratic candidates.
